If you are male who has recently married there are a couple of options open to you with regards to your name.
The general tradition is that the man in a marriage does not change his name. But as stated, that is just a tradition and not a legal issue. If the man decided to change his name upon marriage he could consider the following:
He could take his wife's surname. Although this sounds a simple idea in practice its not that straight forward. A deed poll will often be required because although their is no law stopping him taking his wife's surname, many institutions and agencies will not recognise this type of change. MOST government departments including the DVLA and UK Passport and Identity Service will accept the marriage certificate as proof of the man taking his wife's name. However most banks will not and a deed poll will be required. Having a deed poll will guarantee you name change will be accepted.
He could use a double-barrelled name. This is where you have two surnames rolled into one. For example if the man's name was Paul Tempest and he was married to Clair Stuart he could call himself Paul Tempest-Stuart. If he decides to use a double barrelled surname his wife would probably also change her surname to Tempest-Stuart too. Again a deed poll will be required for most banks and financial institutions to accept the change. It is always advisable to check who asks for what. We would suggest that in time all departments will accept the marriage certificate as proof of a name change.
You can decide if you want to separate the double- barrelled surname with a hyphen or not. its up to you as its your name. It would ne worth considering if any problems arise from this. For example, some companies might this the first part of your surname is actually a middle fore name.
Other options could include
making his wife's
surname his middle name
Coming up with a new name all together
staying with tradition and keeping his name unchanged
