Taking Your Husbands Surname
In the UK it is tradition that the woman takes her husbands surname after the marriage. This has been tradition in the UK for 100's of years. Your marriage certificate will provide the evidence needed that you have taken your husbands name. Most companies will need you to send a copy of the wedding certificate along with a letter explaining that you are married and are taking your husbands name. PLEASE NOTE: agencies such ad the Passport office (UK Identity and Passport Service) will require the ORIGINAL. So it is always a good idea to have a few copies issued. This can be done by the registrar or your minister after the wedding ceremony. No Deed Poll Required.
Other Options That Will Probably Need A Deed Poll
Double Barrelled Names - You may decide that you want to keep your surname to maintain a family like but at the same time you want to take your husbands name. You can do this by joining the two names. For example Clair Thompson and Darren Brown would become Clair Thompson-Brown or Clair Brown-Thompson. It is up to you if you want to use the hyphen although we recommend it to avoid confusion. Also using this option would probably result in the husband wanting to change his name too so you that you both have the same surname.
The double barrelled surname will not be written on the marriage certificate. There for you would usually have to declare this by deed poll. This is because most financial institutions do not accept a marriage certificate as evidence. ALL THE UK GOVERNMENT OFFICES DO ACCEPT A MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE . This includes the DVLA and the Passport Office.
